Needing a strong performance to make a comeback on the second day of regionals, West Albany posted a 331 at Trysting Tree to jump from fourth to second and qualify for next week’s state tournament.
Freshman Brock Nelson posted a team-best 75 to lead the Bulldogs past Willamette and Silverton for a two-day total of 674.
Sophomore Andrew Liles also finished well as he shot 81, but it was his back-nine 39 that was so key.
“Brock was great all day long, and that was really big for us,” coach Matt Boase said.
“Andrew struggled with his putter a little bit early, but he really impressed me by shooting 39 on the back when we needed it.”
Boase said another key for the day was Trenton Crow’s 10-shot improvement. Crow has struggled in the previous three rounds at Trysting Tree this year, but overcame and shot an 85.
Jonah Willard and Grant Moen each shot 90 for the Bulldogs on the day.
“It was important to me to have this group make it to the state tournament,” Boase said.
“With four of the guys being so young we have a really bright future, and there is no better teacher than experience. They learned a lot today about pressure by playing well enough to make it to state, and now they get to learn a bunch more lessons playing against the best teams in the state.”
